I really like your introduction because it made me think that he has no living friends. In your second you mentioned "That was my last straw" the character was very fed up and he ran away from his master. I like the humor you added when the slaves catchers was cruel and rude. The historical details helps me to understand the challenges your character has gone through. One feedback i would like to give you rather than telling you should show the reader.
